India’s Textile Industry Set to Soar, Carpets Take Center Stage
Bhadohi, India: Union Textile Minister Shri Giriraj Singh has projected a significant growth for India’s textile industry, estimating it to reach a staggering US$ 35 billion by 2030. He made this announcement during the inauguration of the 47th Carpet Expo Mart in Bhadohi.
Singh emphasized the crucial role of the carpet industry in achieving the government’s target of $100 billion in textile exports by 2030. The four-day expo, organized by the Carpet Export Promotion Council with the support of the Ministry of Textiles, is being held in the carpet city of Bhadohi.
Addressing the gathering, the minister highlighted the potential for growth in the textile sector, stating that the current value of the industry is $170 million. He emphasized the need for 20 million metric tons of yarn to support this growth and called upon the carpet export organization to align their strategies accordingly. Singh encouraged the carpet industry to increase its turnover from ₹16,000 crore to ₹50,000 crore.
Lauding the heritage of Bhadohi carpets, Singh asserted that India’s carpets are superior to those produced in Turkey. He urged the industry to adopt technology and innovate in design to further enhance their products. To reduce production costs, he suggested setting up woolen mills in Bhadohi for raw material production and establishing a raw material bank.
The minister also announced that a new fiber made from jute and bamboo is under development and will be ready within six months. To reduce logistical costs, he advocated for on-site production.
The four-day expo is witnessing participation from over 500 importer representatives from 67 countries and 260 exporters from various parts of India.
The four-day India Carpet Expo, organized by the Carpet Export Promotion Council with the support of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, was inaugurated today at the Carpet Expo Mart, Carpet City, Bhadohi. The event, which will run until October 18, 2024, was inaugurated by the esteemed Chief Guest, Shri Giriraj Singh, Union Minister of Textiles. Joining him on the dais were Shri Pavitra Margeta, Minister of State for Textiles and Foreign Affairs, Government of India, and Shri Rakesh Sachan, Minister of Industries, Uttar Pradesh. Other dignitaries present included Dr. Vinod Kumar Bind, Member of Parliament, Bhadohi,
.Kuldeep Raj Wattal, Chairman of CEPC, expressed his optimism about the expo, stating that it will open up new markets for Indian handmade carpets. He highlighted the participation of over 153 foreign carpet buyers from countries like Argentina, Australia, Brazil, France, Canada, Israel, Turkey, Japan, Russia, USA, UK, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, and 185 buying agents on the first day itself.The India Carpet Expo is recognized as one of Asia’s largest handmade carpet fairs, offering buyers a unique platform to source the finest handmade carpets, rugs, and other floor coverings under one roof. With the participation of 240 exhibitors, it has become a popular destination for handmade carpets worldwide.The event is expected to benefit over 2 million weavers and artisans involved in this labor-intensive, rural-based MSME cottage industry.
